The Christmas Lights of Folkestone

Updated: Jan 10, 2019

On New Years day evening... I took a walk around the Folkestone town centre. my first impression was... WOW! some of the shops especially Country Fayre at the top of the old high street had made a real effort.

I really hope Country Fayre had a lucrative Christmas... they deserve it.

I wanted to put my new EOS Canon camera to the test... but it became very obvious that there was a difference in the amount and quality of the Christmas lights around the town.

The Folkestone Town hall was reasonably decorated. However. I was met with a moment of sadness when i saw how the decorations had been miserly put up in the Northern section of Guildhall st.

Guildhall Street once the Pride of the Town

Just a few metres away from the Town Hall lies Guildhall Street. For those unfamiliar with the layout of Folkestone town centre.

When I was a child ... I remember the way Guildhall street was. my favourite shop was Steddys a good "old fashioned toy shop" Now many of the shops are closed and looking very neglected. I believe this is now a delicatessen.

The Folkestone Town Council's decision not to decorate the Northern end of Guildhall street in my opinion is wrong. This is the end of town that needs investment. I will be talking to the local shop keepers of Guildhall street North and i will update you on their thoughts.

I hope that some of the money the local councils are being given by central government will be used in the right parts of the town. The imbalance between the West End of Folkestone and the rest of the town needs to change.
